How does the Adoption Process Work?

*The shelter is open for curbside services only until City offices reopen for public access*

Step #1)  View available pets online under "ADOPTABLE ANIMALS". Pick 3 pets online you are interested in meeting. If the location or bio of the pet you are interested in says "foster", it is not at the shelter, please email for more information.

Step #2)  Call 512-805-2657 or email to schedule your appointment. The morning of your appointment, please check online to verify your top picks are still available. If they are not OR you are unable to keep your appointment, please give us a courtesy call. Appointments are limited while we maintain safety of staff and public, so we must make the best use of time to successfully place our pets into their furrever homes!

Step #3) When you arrive for your appointment, call (512) 805-2657 and let us know what parking space you are parked in.  Remain in your vehicle until otherwise directed.  All members of your party must wear a mask at all times.

What are the Requirements to Adopt?

  • Adopters need to show a valid, Government-Issued I.D. and be 18 or older. Being a resident of San Marcos or Hays County is not required - we’ll adopt to good homes anywhere!
  • Adopters will have a conversation with our adoption counselors and volunteers regarding the best pet options for you.  While there is nothing that prohibits pets being kept primarily outdoors, you must have proper fencing and outside housing ready for your pet to keep it protected from the heat and inclement weather. If you need resources for creating a safe space for your pet inside, please ask - we’d love to help! Pets are almost always happier inside with their family.
  • Renters should confirm pet policies with their landlord or property manager. If a pet is returned because the landlord would not allow it, the adoption fee will not be refunded.
  • If there is another dog in your household, we strongly suggest that you bring to the shelter for a meet & greet to evaluate compatibility. (NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE DUE TO CLOSURES)

What are the Fees to Adopt?

Adoption fee is regularly $97 unless otherwise advertised.

For Pets Other Than Cats or Dogs:

Occasionally, SMRAS will care for pets other than cats or dogs such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds or other small mammals. If you see these pets available on our website, please contact for adoption information and fees.
