SMTXU Electric division's safety program has been recognized by the American Public Power Association (APPA), a nationwide organization of community owned electric utilities. Our Electric division earned the APPA’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2021, receiving a Third Place classification among similarly sized electric utilities. This year, 135 of the more than 2,000 public power utilities were recognized.

Dial 811 from any phone in Texas at least two working days prior to beginning excavation. Texas811 will notify local utilities of the dig location, and utility representatives will mark underground utilities with paint or flags. SMTX Utilities is a municipally owned and operated retail electric distribution system purchased by the City of San Marcos in 1986. The Lower Colorado River Authority sells wholesale power to the City.
