How does the Adoption Process Work?

Step #1)  View available pets online under "Adoptable Animals." Pick 3 pets online you are interested in meeting. If the location or bio of the pet you are interested in says "foster," it is not at the shelter, so please email foster@sanmarcostx.gov for more information and to meet the pet.

Step #2)  Come by the shelter during our open hours, call 512-805-2657, or email animaladoptions@sanmarcostx.gov to discuss your interest. Before heading to the shelter, please check online to verify your top picks are still available. If they are not, we can still help find what you're looking for. All members of your party must wear a mask at all times.

ALL ADOPTIONS ARE FIRST COME BY IN-PERSON ADOPTION

What are the Requirements to Adopt?

  • Adopters need to show a valid, Government-Issued I.D. and be 18 or older. Being a resident of San Marcos or Hays County is not required - we’ll adopt to good homes anywhere!
  • Adopters will have a conversation with our adoption counselors and volunteers regarding the best pet options for you.  While there is nothing that prohibits pets being kept primarily outdoors, you must have proper fencing and outside housing ready for your pet to keep it protected from the heat and inclement weather. If you need resources for creating a safe space for your pet inside, please ask - we’d love to help! Pets are almost always happier inside with their family.
  • Renters should confirm pet policies with their landlord or property manager. If a pet is returned because the landlord would not allow it, the adoption fee will not be refunded.
  • If there is another dog in your household, we strongly suggest that you bring it to the shelter for a meet & greet to evaluate compatibility.

What are the Fees to Adopt?

Adoption fee is $97 unless otherwise advertised.

For Pets Other Than Cats or Dogs:

Occasionally, SMRAS will care for pets other than cats or dogs such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds or other small mammals. If you see these pets available on our website, please contact animaladoptions@sanmarcostx.gov for adoption information and fees.
