Wonder World at Hunter Rd Intersection Improvement - January 2021 

Phase 3 construction (Northeast corner adjacent to CVS) will begin on January 4th.

      • On or around January 11th, Northbound Hunter will be reduced to one lane.
      • On or around January 11th, Westbound Wonder World will be reduced to one lane.

Phase 4 (Southeast corner adjacent to Subway) is expected to begin in mid-January. 

Improvements to the intersection will be made in four phases by closing one corner of the intersection at a time. Drivers are asked to please drive cautiously and observe all signage as lane closures will change almost weekly. Please consider avoiding the intersection if alternate routes are available.

Phase 1 construction (Northwest corner) began on Monday, November 30th.

    • Crews will install curb and gutter, sidewalks, curb ramps, and pedestrian signal poles with minimal impacts to travel lanes.
    • After all construction is complete behind the curb, crews will install new crosswalks. At this time, the Northwest corner of the intersection will be closed and lane shifts will be in place to guide traffic around the construction.

Phase 2 (Southwest corner) is expected to begin in mid-December.

The City of San Marcos Engineering Department, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), are designing this intersection improvement project that includes several safety features for both pedestrians and cyclists. 

The proposed intersection improvement project consists of adding two pedestrian refuge islands, new bicycle lanes along intersection approaches on Hunter Road, and updating the signage and striping at the intersection. The proposed improvements would transition into the existing approaches at each corner of the intersection. No additional right-of-way will be required to accommodate the proposed improvements. 

The pedestrian islands and intersection treatments for cyclists will be installed in accordance with the Federal Highway Association (FHWA) Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide. Islands will reduce crossing distance and provide pedestrian refuge, and bike safety will increase with intersection treatments. In addition, signal poles will be relocated in the islands and pedestrian push button signals will be installed. Signal timings will be revised in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)  guidelines.

The services for this project consist of preliminary engineering, final design, bid assistance and construction phase services for the pedestrian and cyclist improvements required at the intersection. The project extends 300’ north and south of intersection along Hunter Road as well as 300’ east and west of intersection along Wonder World Drive. Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road intersection was designed to accommodate vehicular traffic with no preferential treatment for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition northbound motorists tend to travel through the intersection while using northbound right turn lane. The objective of this project is to make the intersection safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road Intersection Improvements project scope include construction of a pedestrian refuge island, reconstruction of sidewalks and curb ramps, installation of pedestrian signal poles, and installation of bicycle lanes, erosion control and traffic control.

Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road Intersection Improvements project is funded through Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program with Federal Participation in the amount of $450,000.
