Wonder World at Hunter Rd Intersection Improvements - January 2021

Phase 3 construction (Northeast corner adjacent to CVS) will begin on January 4th.

      • On or around January 11th, Northbound Hunter will be reduced to one lane.
      • On or around January 11th, Westbound Wonder World will be reduced to one lane.

Phase 4 (Southeast corner adjacent to Subway) is expected to begin in mid-January. 

Improvements to the intersection will be made in four phases by closing one corner of the intersection at a time. Drivers are asked to please drive cautiously and observe all signage as lane closures will change almost weekly. Please consider avoiding the intersection if alternate routes are available.

Phase 1 construction (Northwest corner) began on Monday, November 30th.

Crews will install curb and gutter, sidewalks, curb ramps, and pedestrian signal poles with minimal impacts to travel lanes.

After all construction is complete behind the curb, crews will install new crosswalks. At this time, the Northwest corner of the intersection will be closed and lane shifts will be in place to guide traffic around the construction.

Phase 2 (Southwest corner) is expected to begin in mid-December.

The City of San Marcos Engineering Department, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), are designing this intersection improvement project that includes several safety features for both pedestrians and cyclists. 

Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road intersection was designed to accommodate vehicular traffic with no preferential treatment for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition northbound motorists tend to travel through the intersection while using northbound right turn lane. The objective of this project is to make the intersection safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road Intersection Improvements project scope include construction of a pedestrian refuge island, reconstruction of sidewalks and curb ramps, installation of pedestrian signal poles, and installation of bicycle lanes, erosion control and traffic control.
